A recent study done for mesothelioma cases was presented to the University of Melbourne and showed that there are more mesothelioma cancer cases in Britain and Australia than there is in the United States. According to the study, an estimated 30,000 people will develop and die from mesothelioma cancer between the years of 2000 and 2050. It was also stated that one in every ten carpenters born prior to 1950 would be included in the 30,000. Professor Julian Peto conducted the study.

The professor noted that many of the carpenters working with asbestos prior to 1980 did not have any safety concerns because no one knew about the dangers of asbestos. He also stated that many carpenters still do not use any safety precautions when working with asbestos today. Peto estimates that Britain has close to two thousand mesothelioma cases and Australia as six hundred cases per year. This number is smaller than the United States by fives times.
